A new restaurant is coming to Jacksonville’s Historic Murray Hill neighborhood. Huey’s Nashville Hot Chicken, owned by Nashville native Hughes Brown and his family, will open at 1173 Edgewood Avenue S. The 3,100-square-foot space is currently being transformed into a spicy taste of Nashville, and will feature a myriad of hot chicken dishes — including the classic hot chicken, entrée salad versions and Southern sides in a comfortable, fast-casual environment.

The Brown family is not new to the restaurant industry; the team owned and operated Watermark Restaurant, a popular fine dining restaurant in Nashville, Tenn., for more than 10 years prior to relocating to the Murray Hill neighborhood. Their experience in the industry, combined with their love for Southern cuisine and family connections in Jacksonville, led them to develop the concept for Huey’s Nashville Hot Chicken.

While hot chicken dates back to the 1930s, this Nashville treat has been gaining popularity and demand outside of the state in recent years. The spicy dish, originally created by a scorned lover to punish her mate for his romantic misdeeds, has turned into a regional delicacy. Huey’s intends to bring that original flavor to new levels in the River City.

“ When we decided to leave Nashville and return to my wife’s hometown of Jacksonville, we started to consider that now was the time to turn our concept into a reality. We are very excited to be coming to Murray Hill, a neighborhood where you can feel the community support. We love this area and can’t wait to share a taste of our home with all of you,” said Hughes Brown. “There’s nothing like Nashville hot chicken, and we look forward to bringing that authentic flavor to Jacksonville for everyone to enjoy.

Using local ingredients is a high priority for the Huey’s team. The restaurant will feature free-range chicken in all of their meals. The menu will include both fried and grilled chicken options, with multiple heat levels available. The restaurant will seat up to 100 guests inside; additional patio seating will be available in their outdoor space, encouraging a family-friendly environment.

Remodeling is anticipated to be completed soon; the restaurant is scheduled to open in May. Huey’s dining room will operate with an indoor seating capacity of 25%, following all CDC guidelines for social distancing.

Huey’s is currently hiring for both front and back of house positions. If you’re interested in joining the team, contact [email protected].
