The St Johns River is normally quiet this time of year, however, 2014 will be different with a brand new event, called Yachty Gras. Downtown will have decorated boats for the first time ever, with The Yachty Gras Boat parade and celebration starting at 7 p.m. Friday, January 31st. Come Join the Jacksonville Sail and Power Squadron for a lighted boat parade on the St. Johns River where captains and crews will showcase their vessels decorated with lights and beads in true Mardi Gras fashion.

The evening will conclude with a spectacular fireworks display over our majestic river! Lisa Almeida, The owner of The Freedom Boat Club says, “The boaters love to do these kinds of events because it is a great for families, and the community. It can bring people of all ages together downtown, and it showcases our beautiful river and gives us a chance to celebrate The St. Johns. The Mardi Gras-themed parade sets sail from Metropolitan Park, and it will travel in front of the Hyatt, and pass along the Jacksonville Landing.

The participating vessels will make two laps of the route. The Yachty Gras parade will begin at Metropolitan Park, travel along the Northbank past The Jacksonville Landing, to the Acosta Bridge, and will circle to the Southbank. The route will continue along the Southbank, under the Main Street Bridge and down to the Duval County School Board Building. Afterwards, to get a close-up look of the boats, the after party will be at the Jacksonville Landing. Boaters are still needed and encouraged to participate. Light up the St. Johns River in true Mardi Gras parade style! Break out the lights and beads and register today!
